Manometry

Manometry

The manometry test senses the pressure and constriction of muscles in the esophagus as you swallow. It can detect patterns of muscle activity throughout the length of the esophagus, including contractions that are too weak or too powerful. A barium swallow study can’t measure the strength of muscle contractions.

How do you prepare for a manometry test?
Do NOT eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your scheduled appointment time. You may take your morning medications with sips of water. You should arrive to the GI Lab 30 minutes prior to your scheduled procedure time. A normal result means that your LES and esophageal muscles are working properly. An abnormal result suggests a problem with your esophagus or LES. Possible problems include: abnormal contractions of the muscles in your esophagus.
